The build-up to the curtain raiser of the FNF Trophy has been hotly anticipated over the last few weeks. Everyone was keen to get off to a good start and lay a foundation for the extended 2025 competition.

The opening game, played in blustery and cold conditions, did not disappoint. Sabden, who were without substitutes or a recognised goalkeeper, showed great fight, spirit, and clever game management – but came away without any points.

After Shane Sargeant opened the scoring early for FNF Whites, you might have thought the writing was on the wall. But Sabden grew into the game. An injury to Mitch forced him into goal for the remainder of the match, and Sabden quickly rallied – Jack Birkett bundled home the equaliser after his header was saved at close range by Charlie Shaw.

Half Time: 1–1

Sabden started the second half brightly, confident on the ball but without threatening goal. On 33 minutes, Alfie Cookson – climbing off his sick bed to play – finished from close range after a lovely move down the right.

But fatigue began to show without fresh legs, and FNF Whites grew stronger. Jonny Walker smashed home the equaliser on 38 minutes and set up a grandstand finish.

Tensions rose and briefly boiled over on the pitch, but in such a competitive environment, it was to be expected – especially with the game on a knife edge.

Sabden failed to clear a loose ball with seven minutes to go, and it fell to Joe Cunningham who smashed home a 43rd-minute winner from outside the area to seal a brilliant comeback performance.
